A total of 115 engineers, architects, fabricators and general contractors attended the Steel Workshop hosted by Alberta region in Edmonton on May 5th. The theme for the workshop was Integrated Design and Collaborative Construction and featured speakers on BIM and project planning and delivery from across North America and Europe. Attendees commented they were impressed with the quality and detail of the presentations.
A major focus was the Ice District development in Edmonton’s downtown core. The lunch keynote presentation from Simon O’Bryne of Stantec provided a compelling look at the impact of demographic trends on urban planning and land development, such as Ice District. The emerging influence of millennials and aging baby boomers is transforming the way people live and work in cities. The benefits of collaboration and detailed project planning were key themes in the project profiles for Ice District and Rogers Place Arena in downtown Edmonton and the award winning Glacier Skywalk in Jasper National Park.
The workshop closed with a powerful presentation by Peter Bo Olsen of HT Hojgaard from Denmark on the lessons learned by his firm in their journey to full BIM adoption. He provided strong support for the road map for BIM adoption presented earlier in the day by buildingSMART Canada. The workshop was another example of CISC’s leadership in education and support for steel design solutions.
