The CISC is a proud sponsor of the AISC/ASCE National Student Steel Bridge Competition (NSSBC). This competition requires civil engineering students to design, fabricate and construct a steel bridge and encourages students to apply their theoretical knowledge in a hands-on project that addresses the full breadth of steel design requirements, including: aesthetics, construction speed, lightness, stiffness, economy and efficiency. Competitions are held at regional and national levels.
This year, seven teams from Canadian universities participated at ASCE Regional Student Conferences and four teams including Lakehead University, École de Technologie Supérieure, Université Laval, and University of British Columbia qualify for the National competition. The regional competition results for the participating Canadian teams are as follows:
Lakehead University: 1st Place Overall, ASCE Midwest Regional Conference
École de Technologie Supérieure: 1st Place Overall, ASCE Upstate New York Regional Conference
Université Laval: 2nd Place Overall, ASCE New England Regional Conference
University of British Columbia: 2nd Place Overall, ASCE Pacific North West Regional Conference
University of Waterloo: 4th Place Overall, ASCE Upstate New York Regional Conference
École Polytechnique de Montréal: Not Ranked, ASCE Upstate New York Regional Conference
University of Manitoba: Guest, ASCE Midwest Regional Conference
Université Laval Team at the ASCE New England Student Regional Conference
CISC is providing $2000 travel support to Canadian teams attending the NSSBC. The National competition will be hosted by Oregon State University, in Corvallis, Oregon on May 26-27, 2017. A total of 43 teams will be competing at this event.
