TORONTO, ON (April 29, 2025) – The Canadian Institute of Steel Construction congratulates Prime Minister Mark Carney and the Liberal Party on their election win. We look forward to working collaboratively with the new government, as well as with all Members of Parliament across party lines, to champion the growth and prosperity of Canada’s steel construction industry.

“Prime Minister Carney is stepping in at a critical time for Canada’s economy and key impacted sectors like steel. Canadians are counting on his leadership to address the significant challenges ahead, including ongoing trade tensions with the United States,” Keanin Loomis, President and CEO of the CISC said. “We were pleased to see our industry’s priorities reflected in the Liberal Party’s platform — particularly commitments on domestic procurement — and we look forward to working collaboratively with the government to turn these priorities into action.”

This election, the CISC called on all parties to support the steel industry through targeted measures including:

  1. Introducing domestic procurement/Buy Canadian policies on all taxpayer-funded infrastructure projects, including establishing domestically fabricated requirements;
  2. Strategic investments to strengthen domestic manufacturing to reduce reliance on other countries and enhance economic resilience; and
  3. Implementing a strategic approach to trade agreements to support Canadian industry, including standing up against market-distorting practices such as steel dumping and strengthening diplomatic and trade relationships.

The CISC was pleased to see the Liberal Party – alongside the other major parties – commit to setting “Buy Canadian” standards for federally funded infrastructure projects, prioritizing Canadian steel, aluminum, and forestry materials and to implementing a Made-in-Canada procurement strategy that prioritizes domestic suppliers. The CISC looks forward to working closely with the new federal government to ensure these commitments are implemented effectively and deliver tangible benefits for the Canadian steel sector.

In addition, the CISC will continue to advocate for coordinated efforts between the federal and provincial governments to ensure public infrastructure investments directly benefit Canadian businesses. Projects such as the Île d’Orléans Bridge in Quebec City and the Garden City Skyway – Bridge Twinning Project in St. Catharines, Ontario, should prioritize Canadian steel fabricators to maximize economic returns for taxpayers and strengthen local industries.

Congratulations to all newly elected and re-elected Members of Parliament. The CISC looks forward to working with you to build a stronger steel sector and thereby, a stronger Canada.
