Toronto, ON (November 7, 2024) – The Canadian Institute of Steel Construction (CISC) is proud to announce the 2024 Steel Conference Award Recipients:
- Alfred F. Wong Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to Dr. Reinhold “Reini” Schuster, Distinguished Professor Emeritus, University of Waterloo; and to,
- Dr. Robert Driver, Professor Emeritus, University of Alberta;
- H. A. Krentz Research Award is presented to Dr. Ali Impanpour (principal investigator) and Dr. Yuxiang Chen (collaborator), at the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at the University of Alberta; and the
- G.J. Jackson Fellowship is presented to Brendan Richards, a PhD candidate in the Department of Civil and Resource Engineering at Dalhousie University.

“We are thrilled to honor these remarkable individuals who have demonstrated unparalleled dedication to advancing the steel construction industry,” says Keanin Loomis, CEO and President of the CISC. “Dr. Schuster and Dr. Driver have each made transformative contributions throughout their careers, making them richly deserving of the Lifetime Achievement Award.”
Dr. Schuster is a pioneer in championing cold-formed steel research and is lauded for his instrumental role in developing international standards. His groundbreaking work has made a global impact, shaping practices and harmonizing standards across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Dr. Driver is a trailblazer in structural steel across North America, serving as a foundational influence in shaping key engineering codes and guidelines that have enhanced the safety and efficiency of structural practices. His unwavering commitment to excellence in education has been recognized by both his colleagues and students.
“Dr. Impanpour and Dr. Chen’s work supports the steel industry’s commitment to sustainability, while Brendan Richards represents the promising future of our field. Congratulations to all award recipients for their inspiring commitment to excellence and innovation,” Loomis continues.
The award recipients will be honoured at the CISC’s upcoming conference from November 12-13, 2024 in Calgary, AB.
The CISC conference showcases the best practices of the steel construction industry, offering a unique and valuable opportunity for all participants to meet, exchange, collaborate, and network with industry leaders and stakeholders. This year’s program will highlight topics important to the steel industry right now including sustainability, trade challenges, and the future of the industry.
The conference will also be a forum for in-depth discussions on pressing trade issues, including the recent steel and aluminum tariffs imposed on China and the evolving Canada-U.S. trade relationship in light of the U.S. election.
