Winding through the heart of downtown Ottawa, the Rideau Canal is a waterway that has a profound effect on the urbanism of the city. It transforms into the city’s largest public space in the winter, and provides vital shipping services during the warmer months. The Bytown Bridge reaches across one of the widest gaps on the canal in a single elegant span to connect isolated residential neighborhoods directly to one of the main hubs of commerce and activity in the city: the bustling and vibrant Lansdowne market. It joins two park areas on opposite ends of the canal – Lansdowne Park, and the Echo Drive Sunset viewing point.
