STEEL ROOFING

Architectural Roofing

The architectural type steel roofing system is similar to the traditional steep-sloped roof and is primarily a visual product applied over solid sheathing. Sheet steel roofing is available in a variety of widths, cross-sections, seam types, colours and finishes. Whether for an industrial, commercial, institutional, agricultural or residential project, steel roofing can provide a beautiful aesthetic that will stand up to extreme weather conditions and last for decades.

Structural Standing Seam Roofing

Structural type steel roof systems may be compared to traditional low slope roof membrane systems because they are designed to carry roof loads, resist moisture infiltration on low-slope applications, and can be installed without a solid sheathing substrate. The term “standing seam” is used to refer to many kinds of roofing panels that have a raised vertical seam, which ensures that the panel seams are above the water level. The standing seam can also be used as an architectural element to highlight the roof aesthetics and accent the building’s architecture.

Residential Steel Roofing

Steel roofing is a durable, attractive and environmentally friendly choice for your home. It comes in a variety of colours and styles to suit any style of home. There are several styles and colours of vertical rib, standing seam and tile profile that complement any home. The only difficulty is deciding which one is best for your home. Steel roofing can last as long as forty years or more and, in most cases, requires very little maintenance over the course of its lifespan. We have created a dedicated website for residential steel roofing. Visit SteelRoofingCanada.ca to learn more.

ROOF DECK & COMPOSITE FLOOR DECK

Roof Deck

Steel deck is 38 mm or 76 mm deep, 750 to 900 mm wide, fluted steel sheets used in the construction of a roof as the supporting structural member on which the built-up roofing system is placed. Roof deck is most commonly used in a flat(horizontal) roofing configuration, but can also be used for sloping roofs.

Composite Deck

Composite deck is a similar product to roof deck and is a fluted steel sheet, 38 mm or 76 mm deep. What distinguishes composite deck from plain deck (floor or roof) is the composite structural action developed between the steel deck and a concrete slab. The composite deck initially acts as a stay-in-place form for the concrete floor slab. After the concrete cures the composite steel deck and the concrete interlock creating a composite slab.

Deep Composite Deck

A deep composite deck is a similar product to the regular composite deck but is up to 203 mm deep. This deeper section, combined with additional reinforcing steel and concrete, creates a floor system that can achieve spans over 9 m. The long spans provide additional flexibility and efficiencies in the structural framing system.

STEEL SIDING & CLADDING

Steel Siding

There are different types of sheet steel wall assemblies ranging from the simplest single sheet walls found in agricultural buildings, to sophisticated composite panel assemblies. The wide variety of cladding profiles, paint systems and colours provides for complete architectural expression. Sheet steel wall assemblies are a durable and economical solution. The cavity can be sized to accommodate as much thermal insulation as required while maintaining the integrity of the building enclosure.

STEEL STUDS & JOISTS

Although “Steel” may conjure up images of a heavy, cumbersome material for construction, steel studs and joists from coated sheet steel products are just the opposite. Cold-formed sheet steel is an easy to handle, economical, non-combustible, high quality alternative to more traditional framing materials. Steel framing offers a strong, accurate, dimensionally stable and a durable framing system. Lightweight steel framing will appeal to any one interested in building construction.

CSSBI 61-21: PRODUCT CERTIFICATION STANDARD – COLD FORMED STEEL FRAMING MEMBERS

This product certification standard, developed by the Canadian Sheet Steel Building Institute (CSSBI) covers non-structural and structural cold formed steel framing members.

Under the CSSBI Certification Program, a participating Manufacturer certifies that the designated structural and non-structural cold formed steel (CFS) framing members it produces meets or exceeds the ASTM International (ASTM), Canadian Standards Association (CSA) and American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) standard requirements listed in this program.

The Manufacturer’s product certification is validated by a third-party audit of the Manufacturer’s product and production practices, appropriate testing and inspection and applies to products manufactured for sale in Canada that fall within the range of standard sizes specified in CSSBI-61:21.

STEEL BUILDING SYSTEMS

A steel building system features structural steel and cladding components, plus related accessories, engineered and designed to act as an integrated building system. The building system utilizes rigid frames or columns and beams as the primary structural elements; alternatively, it may be a “self-framing” type, using the cladding as the primary load bearing roof and/or wall elements in addition to functioning as a weather barrier.

These buildings are fabricated by the manufacturer at a central location and shipped to builders across Canada. The manufacturer is responsible for the structural design and fabrication of the building system, and the builder is responsible for the erection and related work (e.g. concrete foundations, interior finishing, HVAC systems, etc.).
